Aloe leafAloe vera (inner leaf)
Inner-leaf gel, not whole-leaf, which contains aloin, a laxative that irritates IBD guts. In a London double-blind trial (n = 44), 100 mL of aloe gel twice daily for four weeks produced remission in 30% versus 7% on placebo and improvement in 37% versus 7%, with reduced histological activity; the numbers were small and just short of significance. An Italian enema trial is registered. Organic, clean label.

I have found aloe very helpful, and where I can I prefer a plant or food source over a capsule. Inner-leaf gel is the form that was studied and the form to look for; whole-leaf products contain aloin, a laxative that irritates an IBD gut. Aloe on the skin and aloe swallowed are different questions, and a plant in the garden is not a verified product: if you drink it, buy a preparation whose label says inner fillet and aloin-free.
