EGCG, the principal catechin. In a small double-blind pilot (n = 19), 400 to 800 mg/day of purified EGCG for 56 days produced a 67% response rate versus 0% on placebo in mild-to-moderate UC refractory to mesalamine or azathioprine; a retrospective series also reported improvement in refractory pouchitis. This extract is decaffeinated and standardized to 70% EGCG.

High-dose green-tea extracts have rare liver signals, take with food, not fasting.

Andrew's notes

Personally I would rather drink ceremonial-grade matcha, which delivers EGCG along with the rest of the leaf and the ritual of a cup. The capsule is the right tool when you do not have access to good matcha, when you are traveling, or when you simply will not whisk a bowl every morning. The extract-specific caution stands: concentrated extracts have rare liver signals that a cup of tea does not, so take it with food.
